JANS started operations of Amami Remote AFIS with advanced equipment

JANS has been gradually moving towards remote operations of Aerodrome Flight Information Services (AFIS) at airports with low air traffic volumes. The installation of a remote air-ground communication facility (RAG) and the concentration of human resources of ANS staff at base centers have enabled JANS to operate more efficiently and to deal more flexibly with changes in air traffic situations and various needs of aircraft and airport operators.

In order to promote remote operations of AFIS at airports with more air traffic than ever, JANS decided to newly introduce advanced equipment for remote operations of AFIS, which simulates the operational environment at the control tower on-site, and started the operation of the "Amami Remote AFIS" with this equipment at Naha Flight Service Center (FSC) in Okinawa, in October 2021.

In this new Remote AFIS operations, Air Traffic Services Flight Information Officers use the Remote VFR system for ATS (RVA). The RVA consists of Out-of-the-window (OTW) and Pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras to capture the surroundings and sound collection microphones, which are installed at the local Amami airport, in addition to traditional voice communication equipment. At the Naha FSC, a 360° panoramic view is shown on large displays in front of the operational console, along with the ambient sound of Amami airport. There are also displays to provide real-time views from PTZ cameras and staff can control these cameras with a function for motion detection and automatic tracking of aircrafts in flight. By introducing such new equipment, even a relatively busy airport like Amami Airport, with 8,191 landings per year in FY2018 before Covid-19, can be operated from the distant base center of Naha FSC in the same way as operations at Amami control tower, while providing necessary information including real-time runway conditions and/or air traffic status to aircrafts flying in and around Amami airport to support flight safety efficiently.
