Minister Mr. Ishii received a courtesy visit from Trainees in International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering at the Building Research Institute (2016/09/12)

On September 12th 2016, Mr. Keiichi Ishii, Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), received a courtesy visit from 21 trainees from 11 countries including India, the Philippines, Egypt, Nicaragua and Myanmar, who are undergoing training in international seismology and earthquake engineering at the International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering (IISEE) of the Building Research Institute (BRI), a National Research and Development Agency, upon the completion of their training.
The IISEE has three courses for training in international seismology and earthquake engineering —Seismology, Earthquake Engineering, and Tsunami Disaster Mitigation— and training was conducted over about one year starting from October 2015. This training has been conducted since 1960, and the number of students who have completed training, including the recent trainees, is now 1,142 from a total of 81 countries.
In his remarks, the Minister emphasized that the recent major earthquake in Japan has made earthquake experts more important, and the need for even greater disaster risk reduction measures has been recognized. He also said it is important to create a network of experts through opportunities such as this training, and for trainees to become leaders in earthquake disaster prevention in their own countries.
