It gives me a great pleasure to present Mr. Koji SEKIMIZU, Director of Maritime Safety Division of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), as a candidate for the next Secretary General of IMO.
Mr. SEKIMIZU has a long-standing career in the areas of maritime safety and marine environmental protection. In IMO, he has been playing a vital role and demonstrating strong leadership in many key projects including the establishment of Cooperative Mechanism in Malacca and Singapore Straits and the implementation of the Djibouti Code of Conduct for anti-piracy capacity building of surrounding countries of the Gulf of Aden.
Mr. SEKIMIZU has a firm vision derived from his knowledge and experiences in maritime field. He is also a man of action. I am confident , with his knowledge, vision and professionalism, he will lead IMO in making further significant progress discharging its responsibilities to promptly tackle challenging issues and meeting expectations of Member Governments.
Finally, let me take this opportunity to reaffirm Japan’s long-standing and strong support for the Organization, and also its determination to continue to play an active and constructive role in IMO to promote safety and environmental soundness at the sea.
