A Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of ITS was signed with the European Commission

The Road Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and the Information Society and
Media Directorate General (DG-INFSO) of the European Commission signed a Memorandum of Cooperation
(MoC) in the field of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) on Thursday June 9.

Under this MoC, the two parties will promote cooperation in the field of ITS, by sharing information on research
and development projects, identifying research areas for cooperation and harmonization, and supporting
standardization activities.

The Road Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and the Research and Innovative
Technology Administration (RITA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation signed a similar MoC in the field of
ITS in October 2010.

By signing the MoC with the European Commission, a trilateral ITS cooperation system linking Japan, the U.S.
and Europe has been established.

About the MoC

 

      The MoC was Signed by the Road Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and
the Information Society and Media Directorate General of the European Commission

(Signers: Mr. Sigeru Kikukawa, Director-General of the Road Bureau, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport
and Tourism and
Mr. Robert Madelin, Director-General of DG-INFSO, European Commission)

 

-          The Road Bureau and the DG-INFSO have held regular meetings since 1994. By signing the MoC, the parties
intend to strengthen the cooperation system linking their two organizations in order to clearly stipulate their
mutual cooperative relationship. 

 

The Road Bureau and DG INFSO conform the following;

 

1) To identify the research and development areas that would benefit from a harmonized approach and that should
be addressed by coordinated research activities, based on Technical Road Map for development of Cooperative
Systems, developed by a Task Force of DG INFSO, and development and implementation activities of Smartway
by the Road Bureau.

 

2) To share information on ongoing research and development projects, estimated benefits, research outcomes, and
result of field demonstrations by means of periodical dialogues and information exchange.

 

3) To inform stakeholders involved in the development of Cooperative Systems, in particular the automotive
industry and standardization organizations, of the continuing cooperation and progress between them, and to
promote active participation from and exchange among the stakeholders of Japan and the European Union by
jointly organizing symposiums, seminars and meetings.


4) To strongly support development of globally open standards.
