1. "JAPAN'S 100 GREAT BEACHES" - OVERVIEW

With Japan's new national holiday "Ocean Day" (Umi no Hi) to be observed for the first time in 1996, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Construction, the Environment Agency and other government agencies have agreed to help sponsor an effort to select "Japan's 100 Great Beaches." The goal envisioned in this compilation is to utilize the inauguration of this new national holiday to redouble the awareness among the Japanese people of the important role played by the ocean in their lives, to encourage them to appreciate the blessings of the ocean, and to foster the public spirit of taking care of the ocean. The selections will be made from the perspective of the characteristics of beaches as scenic resources, constructive measures undertaken as coastal preservation, environmental protection and other purposes, the deep ties with consumers and other factors.
In making these selections, a screening panel made up of persons of relevant learning and experience will study beaches recommended by the various prefectures of Japan as well as those submitted by the general public, in choosing "Japan's 100 Great Beaches."
Also to be included in the screen target will be lakes, marshes and other inland water bodies.

2. UPON SELECTION AS "JAPAN'S 100 GREAT BEACHES"

The announcement of the winning beaches will be made on July 10 at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, with the beaches so selected to be presented with official certification from the "Japan's 100 Great Beaches" central committee. A guidebook of the 100 beaches will be compiled, with local indications made of the selection of a beach as one of "Japan's 100 Great Beaches."
