・Specially designated major ports: Those major ports which are particularly important in promoting foreign trade.
Major ports: Ports having an important bearing on national interests.
Local ports: Ports other than major ports.
Ports of refuge: Ports designated as a place in which small ships can take shelter from rain storms.
・Article 56 ports: Ports without a port district.

Notes:

Dorinzawa Port in Tokyo is designated as a port of refuge, but without an administrator. It is not an Article 56 port, and is not included in the list.

The 951 regional ports include Article 56 ports.
