
Introduction
Since 1970, five five-year plans for seashore development projects have been adopted and carried out jointly by four government agencies (the Agricultural Structure Improvement Bureau of the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry, the Fisheries Agency, the Ports and Harbors Bureau of the Transport Ministry, and the River Bureau of the Construction Ministry). It was recently decided to draw up the 6th five-year seashore development plan starting in fiscal 1996, in order to continue to promote seashore development projects to create a fertile seashore toward the 21st century while adapting to changes in social and economic conditions. On February 20, the Cabinet approved the size of investments to be made under the new five-year plan.

1. The 6th five-year seashore development plan which extends from fiscal 1996 through fiscal 2000 will be promoted vigorously, with the size of investment shown below.
Total amount 1.77 trillion yen Breakdown Seashore development projects 1.34 trillion yen Disaster-related projects,
independent regional projects130 billion yen Coordination expenses 300 billion yen
2. The present plan will be carried out flexibly while social and economic trends and the nation's financial condition are taken into consideration.
