Forestry of Hokkaido

Forests have important functions, such as conservation at land and headwaters to protect our living conditions. In recent years, the public requests to the forests are becoming diversified and complicated, like is mitigation of global warming, use for health, culture and education, and conservation of biodiversity. Also there are great expectations to the timber as renewable and environmental-friendly material with a low impact on the environment. Hokkaido has vast forests of 5.54million hectares including natural forests with various species of trees, like Abies sachalinensis, Quercus mongolica, var. grosseserrata, Tilia japonica). The forests need to respond to those requests. Therefore we promote forest management for the following;
○Improvement of the quality of forest resources
○Cyclical use of forest resources
○Acceleration of using forests for health, culture and education, and for maintenance and creation of good living conditions for cites and mountain villages

Promoting forest improvement and development of forest road network
