The Japan Tourism Agency welcomes international conferences to Japan!
The Japan Tourism Agency is working on a variety of activities to attract and host international conferences, such as exhibiting at overseas trade shows to raise Japan's profile as an international conference venue, and inviting decisionmakers for international conference venue selection.
Background
The number of international conferences held in Japan decreased after peaking in 2003, with Japan placing 4th in Asia in 2006. In response to the situation, the then Prime Minister Shinzo Abe laid out the goal of "increasing the number of major international conferences by over 50% in the next five years, and making Japan one of the major conference-hosting countries in Asia" in his general policy speech of September 2006.As a result, "Program for International Exchange Promotion through Hosting and Attracting International Conferences" was developed in May 2007 to focus all of the resources available into a joint effort by the public and the private sectors to attract and host international conferences. To this end, JTA is working with the Cabinet Secretariat to coordinate the effort and manage its progress. In addition, JTA is conducting a number of promotional activities to increase Japan's profile, such as exhibiting in overseas trade shows, as well as providing concrete support relating to hosting and attracting international conferences to those organizers and other parties engaged in this effort.
