Overnight Travel Statistics Survey (second preliminary report for January 2017, first preliminary report for February 2017)

This is a summary of the results of the Overnight Travel Statistics Survey for January 2017 (second preliminary report) and February 2017 (first preliminary report).

1. Total number of overnight guests

--In January 2017, the total number of overnight guests was 36.10 million, an increase of 0.8% from the same month of the previous year and the highest number for January since the survey began in 2007.
 
In February 2017, the total number of overnight guests was 35.85 million, a decrease of 2.6% from the same month of the previous year.
 
--The total number of Japanese overnight guests for January 2017 was down 0.5% from the same month of the previous year and for February 2017 the number was down 2.2% from the same month of the previous year.
 
--The total number of international overnight guests for January 2017 was up 8.0% from the same month of the previous year and for February 2017 the number was down 4.5% from the same month of the previous year.
 

2. Room occupancy rates


--The room occupancy rate for January 2017 was 52.4%. The rate for February was 59.9%.
 
--Only Osaka prefecture had January room occupancy rates of over 80% in resort hotels and city hotels, the same rates as in January 2016.

--In Osaka prefecture, in addition to city and resort hotels, all facility types had the highest rates nationwide.

--In the Kyushu area, there was an increase from the same month the previous year in five prefectures: Fukuoka, Saga, Kumamoto, Oita and Kagoshima.
(The room occupancy rate in the Kyushu area as a whole was 54.5%, an increase of 1.7% from the same month of the previous year).
