Annual Value of the Consumption Trends of International Visitors to Japan Survey for 2016 (final report)

 ~Expenditure by international visitors to Japan at 3.7476 trillion yen~

--Travel expenditure of international visitors to Japan in 2016 (final report) was 3.7476 trillion yen, a 7.8% increase from the previous year (3.4771 trillion yen), which is the highest annual value ever.

--Travel expenditure per international visitor to Japan was 155,896 yen (down 11.5% from the previous year).

Outline of the Results of the Survey on Consumption Trends of International Visitors to Japan

1. Travel Expenditure of International Visitors to Japan

--Travel expenditure of international visitors to Japan in 2016 (final report) was 3.7476 trillion yen, a 7.8% increase from the previous year (3.4771 trillion yen),
 
--Looking at travel expenditure by country and region: China was the highest at 1.4754 trillion yen (39.4% of the total). Next was Taiwan at 5.245 trillion yen (14.0%), then South Korea at 3.577 trillion yen (9.5%), Hong Kong at 2.947 trillion yen (7.9%), and the United States at 2.130 trillion yen (5.7%). Five countries accounted for 76.5% of the total.
 
--Looking at travel expenditure by expense item, shopping was the highest (38.1%), but less than the previous year (41.8%). However, money spent on accommodation, food and beverage, and transportation all increased compared to the previous year.

2. Travel expenditure per international visitor to Japan

--Travel expenditure per international visitor to Japan in 2016 (final report) was 155,896 yen, down 11.5% from the previous year (176,167 yen).
 
--Looking at per capita travel expenditure by country and region, Australia was the highest (247,000 yen), then China (232,000 yen) and Spain (224,000 yen).
 
--Per capita travel expenditure for China decreased by 18.4% compared to the previous year, the largest decrease of all the nationalities / regions included in the survey.
 
--Looking at travel expenditure by expense item, shopping was the highest (59,000 yen), then accommodation, (42,000 yen), and food and beverage (32,000 yen). Countries from Europe, such as Spain, the UK, Germany and Italy, as well as the United States and Australia, dominated the top spots for accommodation expenditure. However, China placed highest for shopping expenditure at 123,000 yen per person.
