Consumption Trend Survey for International Visitors to JapanSurvey Results for January to March 2017 (Preliminary)

- Tourism consumption by international visitors increased by 4.0% year-on-year to 967.9 billion yen -

•Tourism consumption by international visitors for January to March 2017 was 967.9 billion yen. This is a 4.0% increase compared to the previous year (930.5 billion yen).
•Tourism consumption per international visitor was 148,066 yen. This is an 8.5% decrease compared to the previous year (161,743 yen).

1. Overall Tourism Consumption by International Visitors

Overall tourism consumption by international visitors for January to March 2017 (preliminary) is estimated to have been 967.9 billion yen, which is a 4.0% increase compared to the previous year (930.5 billion yen). 
Tourism consumption by visitors from South Korea, Thailand, and the United States increased compared to the previous year, which raised the overall number.
(Note) The number of international visitors to Japan was 6.54 million people, a 13.6% increase compared to the previous year (5.75 million people).
 

2. Tourism Consumption per International Visitor

Tourism consumption per international visitor was 148,066 yen, which was an 8.5% decrease compared to the previous year (161,743 yen).
By country and region, Spain (249,000 yen) ranked the highest followed by Australia (241,000 yen) and China (225,000 yen).
 

3. Tourism Consumption by International Visitors by Country / Region

In terms of tourism consumption by international visitors by country and region, China ranked the highest with 371.8 billion yen (a 38.4% share). Taiwan ranked second with 133.4 billion yen (a 13.8% share), followed by South Korea with 118 billion yen (a 12.2% share), Hong Kong with 80.1 billion yen (8.3% share), and the United States with 46.3 billion yen (4.8% share), and these top five countries and regions accounted for 77.4% of the overall figure.
 

4. Tourism Consumption by International Visitors by Expense Item

Looking at the shares of tourism consumption expenditure by international visitors by category, shopping ranked the highest at 38.7%, followed by accommodation (26.3%), then food and beverage, etc. (19.8%). 
Compared to the previous year, shares of expenditure on accommodation and food and beverage, etc. increased, while expenditure on shopping decreased.
 

5. Tourism Consumption per International Visitor by Expense Item

Looking at tourism consumption per international visitor by category, expenditure on shopping ranks the highest at 57,000 yen, followed by accommodation (39,000 yen), and food and beverage, etc. (29,000 yen). 
High expenditure on accommodation is seen among visitors from Europe, the United States, and Australia, with especially high figures for Australia (94,000 yen) and Spain (87,000 yen). The highest expenditure on entertainment was seen among visitors from Australia (27,000 yen), and the highest expenditure on shopping was seen among those from China (120,000 yen).
