The Number of Tax-free shops in Each Prefecture as of April 1, 2018

At the Japan Tourism Agency, based on the “Tourism Vision to Support the Future of Japan” (March 30, 2016 Council for the Tourism Vision to Support the Future of Japan meeting decision) and the "Basic Tourism Promotion Plan" (March 28, 2017 Cabinet decision), we are creating several initiatives to attain our goal of increasing the number of regional tax-free shops to 20,000 in 2018.
In this report, we have compiled the number of tax-free shops by prefecture as of April 1, 2018.
--The number of tax-free shops as of April 1 this year was 44,646 nationwide, an increase of 1,855 shops, or 4.3%, in the six months from October 1 last year (the time of the last survey).
Also, in the 12 months from April 1 last year, the number increased by 4,114, or 10.2%.
--The breakdown of tax-free shops was 27,528 in the three major metropolitan areas, and 17,118 in regional areas excluding the three metropolitan areas.
In the six months since October 1 last year, the number of shops has increased 4.5% in the three major metropolitan areas and 4.1% in regional areas.
In addition, in the 12 months since April 1 last year, the number of shops has increased 10.4% in the three major metropolitan areas and 9.7% in regional areas.
