Overnight Travel Statistics Survey(second preliminary report for January 2018, first preliminary report for February 2018)

This is a summary of the results of the Overnight Travel Statistics Survey for January 2018 (second preliminary) and February 2018 (first preliminary).

Outline of the results of the Overnight Travel Statistics Survey for January 2018 (second preliminary) and February 2018 (first preliminary).

1. Total number of overnight guests

―The total number of overnight guests in January 2018 was 35.73 million, a year-on-year decrease of 1.0%. Also, the total number of overnight guests for February 2018 was 36.86 million, a year-on-year increase of 2.8%.

―The total number of Japanese overnight guests decreased by 1.5% year-on-year in January and decreased by 0.7% year-on-year in February.
 
―The total number of international visitor overnight guests was 6.27 million in January 2018, a year-on-year increase of 1.1% and the highest number for January since the survey started. In February 2018, there was a 21.3% year-on-year increase.
 

2. Room Occupancy Rates

―The room occupancy rate in January was 52.1% overall. Also, it was 60.5% overall in February.

―In the prefectures that had more than an 80% room occupancy rate in January, city hotels had the highest rates in 1 prefecture (January 2017: 1), and resort hotels in 1 (January 2017: 1).

―With regard to the overall occupancy rate, Osaka had 73.6%, which was the highest value nationwide. In particular, the occupancy rates of resort hotels at 84.8% and city hotels at 83.8%  were extremely high and business hotels continued to record a high value at 74.1%.
