Research study on the efficiency and profitability in regional public transport business（Report No.132）
Summary
This study clarified an important index in evaluating the efficiency and
profitability of public transport companies, and confirmed the index-value
is related with the utilization of business environment data and passenger
flow data. Additionally, learning from case studies, we have organized
the measures to lead to improvement of the index-value, also organized
the points of view and the flow of analysis using data. The summary is
as follows;
1. It is anticipated that the business environment of regional public transport
companies would be getting harder due to the acceleration of population
decline and low birthrate. In order to maintain regional public transportation,
the companies need to enhance the profitability and efficiency by grasping
their own situation appropriately and continuously reexamining the services
as utilizing data.
2. Grasping the current status through literature searches and hearings
with companies or intellectuals, we set an index to comprehend and evaluate
the efficiency and profitability of public transport companies, as referring
to preceding researches and case studies. In particular, we focused on
the peculiar index to transportation business in setting an index and emphasized
the efficiency of "services (operation)" "people (workpeople)"
"things (physical assets).
3. As a result of questionnaire survey, it was found there are few public transport companies who are able to use the analysis and concrete measures, even if they are holding various data. Besides, it was also confirmed there is tendency that companies in good index-value are already analyzing various data and utilizing it to measures.
4. By performing case studies and analyzing the results depending on the
companies' issue or the state of use/possession of data, we indicated the
improvement plan, and in some companies, it was possible to do provisional
estimate the improvement situation from an initial index-value. On the
other hand, it was realized again that the regional public transport companies
need know-how for improving measures with utilizing various data, as well
as the environment and human resources able to estimate the improvement
measures.
