Section 4 ITS toward Standard Deployment

Parking Information

-Osaka City : Parking space guidance system
In large cities, drivers are often at a loss to find available parking space. Vehicles parked on streets frequently cause traffic congestion. In order to meet the needs of parking lot users, the Osaka National Road Maintenance Work Office provided information on parking space through the Internet on a trial basis between February 4 and March 23, 1998, as one of intelligent means of providing information on availability of parking space. Information was provided on 45 parking lots in three districts--the Diamond area in front of Osaka Station, the Senba area and the Ohgimachi area, and was updated every five minutes on the homepage of the office.
The index page carried a map of Osaka City. After area selection was clicked, a detailed map of the selected area was displayed with information on parking availability. When the desired parking space on the map was clicked, information was shown in the window below: name, address, phone number, business hours, parking fees and shops available for discounts.
A questionnaire page was also provided to get feedback on the experimental system and to identify needs for a new parking guidance system.
Under the concept of "Continuous and Multimedia Supply of Information," information may possibly be provided through the Internet at the time of departure, through VICS during driving and through existing parking information guidance systems in areas close to the destination.
