System architecture development

- Backdrop of development (approaches taken in Japan so far)
The five governmental bodies concerned with ITS released their "Comprehensive Plan for ITS in Japan" in July 1996 which clarified long-term visions on the user services and basic concepts for development and deployment of ITS. Under collaboration with academics and industries, research and implementation activities for each constituent system of ITS have been well underway. Some participants have pointed out, however, that the overall image of this large system is difficult to fully understand, and that functions and information necessary for the actual systems are unclear. The situation necessitated an overall scheme that goes a step ahead of long-term visions, for efficient construction of ITS as an integrated system.

Under these circumstances, the five governmental bodies started development of the system architecture in January 1998.
