ETC(Electronic Toll Collection System) - Global standard ETC started

- Smart Interchanges to revitalize regional communities
Areas close to interchanges usually enjoy growth in population and incomes, and are attractive places for companies to set up businesses. As such, construction of an interchange is often welcomed and even requested in many areas along expressways. Smart IC requires only small structures, reducing the necessary land area to about one-third and construction cost to about half those for conventional interchanges (reference: Proposals by the Smartway Project Advisory Committee). Thus, Smart ICs will help to revitalize regional communities.

Concept of a typical Smart IC

Extensive land is necessary to accommodate groups of toll gates.

Land area can be reduced since the toll gates need not be grouped, and construction cost can also be lowered.

By constructing dedicated ETC gates in service areas (SAs) and parking areas (PAs) through which vehicles can make U-turns, SAs and PAs will be much more convenient. In addition, regional communities will be revitalized by linking SAs and PAs to commercial, recreational, and physical distribution facilities.
