Section4 ITS deployment progress in Japan

ETC(Electronic Toll Collection System) - Global standard ETC started

- Deployment of new services using DSRC system
The 5.8 GHz-band active DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication) system used for ETC in Japan is an information infrastructure which forms the foundation for ITS. For full-scale implementation of ITS services by Smartways, the DSRC system must be able to receive a large volume of information at high speed, be compatible with various ITS applications, and have high reliability.
In addition, the use of the DSRC system for such ITS services as toll transactions and road operation is under consideration (see the figure below), which will open new markets.

Overview of the Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) System

DSRC(Dedicated Short Range Communication)
- 5.8GHz-band active system adopted for DSRC system for various ITS applications
Upon implementing ETC in Japan, the world's first 5.8GHz-band active system was adopted for interactive DSRC between on-board and roadside unit. In this active system, which is also called a transceiver system, both on-board and roadway equipment have oscillators that allow them to both transmit and receive signals.
Thus, the active system enables information to be communicated faster, in larger volume and with higher reliability compared to the passive system, and so can be applied to various ITS services.
