Toward practical use of the Smart Cruise System

- Improving safety while driving dramatically
The Smart Cruise Systems are being jointly developed by the Ministry of Transport which has been promoting research and development on ASV (Advanced Safety Vehicle) and the Ministry of Construction which has been promoting research and development on AHS (Advanced Cruise-Assist Highway Systems). .
The Smart Cruise Systems provides the following three functions to drivers, when the Smartway detects and provides in real-time to Smart Cars the information on obstacles in front, vehicles in an intersection, location on the road, and road surface conditions:

  1. information provision to make up for the delay in the driver's detection;
  2. warnings to alert misjudgment; and
  3. cruise assistance to correct erroneous operation.
Through these functions, the Smart Cruise Systems supports the drivers' following actions to avoid accidents: recognize the dangerous situation; making judgements to avoid danger; and make necessary operations. This way, the system dramatically improves safety while driving.

Rear-end collision warning system: effective for avoiding traffic accidents
The rear-end collision warning system is one of the systems to initiate the Smart Cruise Systems. The Kinki Regional Construction Bureau of the Ministry of Construction installed the system in 1994 at a road curve on the Meihan National Route (National Route 25 in Nara Prefecture) that was prone to accidents. In the system, congestion and collided or broken-down cars ahead are automatically detected by the installed cameras, and the information is displayed on warning boards for the following cars. The system has halved the number of accidents.

TV camera

TV cameras watch for unforeseen occurrences like accidents 24 hours a day.
Rear-end collision warning board

When accidents and congestion occur, information is provided quickly for trailing vehicles through information panels.

Effect of a rear-end collision warning system
Number of accidents with fatalities or injuries
Before deployment (1992-1993) 10.5 cases /year
After deployment (1994-1998) 3.8 cases /year
