Toward practical use of the Smart Cruise System

- Proving tests program "Smart Cruise 21"
The Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Construction bigan a proving tests program called "Smart Cruise 21" in October 2000, at test driving courses in the Public Works Research Institute of the Ministry of Construction located in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Using test vehicles on courses that simulate actual roads, the tests are intended to reveal the effectiveness of seven services to be launched sequentially starting from 2003, in terms of accident avoidance and compatibility with driver behavior under various road conditions.
In addition, a public demonstration "Smart Cruise 21 - Demo 2000" will be held from 28 November to 1 December 2000 (see 4-20).



- Systems for smart cruise supporting services and outline of test facilities
The Public Works Research Institute of the Ministry of Construction has been testing the seven services for the Smart Cruise System at the six performance test sites on the test course, each designed to correspond to each of the seven.
