Section4 ITS deployment progress in Japan

Establishment of comfortable and safe cruise environment

- Rear-end collision warning system

Accounting for 70 percent of all accidents, the rate of rear-end accidents is high on the National Highway No. 25, otherwise known as the Meihan Line (average rate of rear-end accidents on main national highways in Mie Prefecture: 50 to 60 percent).
To address this problem, the Rear-end Warning System was introduced from July 1998 on sections such as in Seki-cho in Suzuka-gun, which cuts through a mountainous area and frequently causes accidents because of many sharp bends and steep slopes. The number of accidents on this highway within one year before the introduction of the system was 17 (with two cases of personal injury), but it reduced to 10 within one year after the introduction (with one case of personal injury).
This system detects such information as traffic volume and the difference in speed between two vehicles by processing image data monitored with CCTV cameras, and displays a warning on message boards to draw the attention of the following driver, thereby preventing rear-end accident. Surveillance cameras are also installed in tunnels to detect accidents and congestion and draw drivers' attentions.
