Section4 ITS deployment progress in Japan

Establishment of comfortable and safe cruise environment

- Incident Detection System

Zigzagging through large cities, the Hanshin Expressway has many sharp bends and blind curves. Such sections have high accident rates, and are likely to cause secondary disasters due to the short visibility distance.
On the curved section of Awaza on the Kobe Line No.3, which is one of such sections and has a radius of curvature of 60 m and a descending gradient of 4.56%, the Incident Detection System was introduced in 1992 to cope with this problem. This system can quickly detect accidents and provide information to the following vehicles, reducing the ratio of secondary accidents from 2.8 to 1.6%. It also reduced the time required to provide accident information to the following vehicles from about 8 minutes to a minimum of 2 seconds.
