Section4 ITS deployment progress in Japan

Establishment of comfortable and safe cruise environment

- Incident Detection System

Frontal collisions and collision with guard rails frequently occur in the Chigira District of Sagamiko-machi of Tsukui-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture, where the National Highway No. 20 runs through steep mountainous terrain, because of the narrow widths and continuous sharp bends.
In addition, since there are many blind curves along such sections, serious accidents could occur if incidents such as fallen objects or stranded vehicles are not detected quickly.
In October 2000, the Incident Detection System was introduced in the sections with blind curves on this highway, to help prevent head-on collisions by informing the driver that a vehicle is approaching from the opposite direction; help prevent secondary collisions by informing the following vehicles of accidents ahead of them; and help the road administrator quickly remove the obstacle on the road caused by such accidents.
