Section4 ITS deployment progress in Japan

Advances in navigation systems (VICS, etc.)

- Areas covered by the service steadily growing to encompass the whole nation
Areas covered by the VICS service, which were initially limited to ordinary roads in the Tokyo Metropolitan area (Tokyo, Chiba, Saitama, and Kanagawa Prefectures), expressways up to about 100 km from Tokyo, and the entire Tomei and Hanshin Expressways, are now steadily being enlarged to cover the whole nation. By March 1998, the service coverage was extended to all of the expressways nationwide, and ordinary roads in the Tokyo Metropolitan area, Osaka area, and Aichi, Kyoto, Nagano, and Hyogo Prefectures. An information service has been provided on Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, which is the longest suspension bridge in the world (3,911 m), since April 5 of the same year when the bridge opened.
Coverage in Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Hokkaido (Sapporo area), Miyagi, Miyazaki, and Okinawa Prefectures is to be completed by June 2000, with subsequent expansion planned to cover the whole nation.
