Although the number of long-distance bus users has increased in recent years, the busjacking incident in Kyushu in May 2000 prompted calls for measures to ensure the safety of such buses. In response, in September 2000, the long-distance bus service between Hiroshima and Matsue Cities started experimental operation of an emergency call system using GPS-assisted on-bus location positioning and telecommunication apparatus, which can provide users with information such as bus location and predicted arrival time and which can send signals to the bus company in case of emergencies.
This system allows emergencies such as crimes to be immediately detected and swift action to be taken. The system also enables deviations from the designated route and unusual stoppages of buses in emergencies to be monitored at the control office.
