Section4 ITS deployment progress in Japan

ETC(Electronic Toll Collection System) - Global standard ETC started

- Rapid promotion for nationwide deployment
ETC services started in the Tokyo metropolitan area, mainly in Chiba Prefecture, from April 2000. The system will be expanded to cover about 800 toll gates nationwide by the end of FY 2001, and to major toll about 900 gates throughout the country by FY 2002.

China moving toward adoption of 5.8-GHz DSRC for ETC
Although several DSRC systems have been developed and used in China, they use different frequency bands and thus are not compatible with each other. To solve this problem, the Chinese Government has been working on the domestic standardization of the DSRC systems for ETC, with completion planned by the end of 2000. In conjunction with this, the government hosted the 4th Asia-Pacific ITS Seminar in Beijing in July 2000, during which an ETC technical demonstration was held.
The DSRC systems presented during the demonstration used the 5.8 GHz-band, which indicates that this frequency band will be adopted as the standard for the DSRC systems in China. The hybrid-type roadside equipment compatible with both the 5.8 GHz-band active system (Japanese system) and passive system (CEN system) also attracted a lot of attention from the participants in the demonstration.
