Field test on ITS for pedestrians
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport conducted, from February to March 2001, a field test on ITS for pedestrians at the underground shopping area in Umeda in Osaka City with the participation of monitors invited from the public (see 3-48). In the test, a PDA device was provided to the monitors who traveled by following the route guidance from the device (e.g. map and characters displayed and voice guidance) between the origin and destination selected by them. The PDA devices helped the physically disabled such as wheelchair users find the optimal barrier-free route.
The National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management of the Ministry is developing a prototype of ITS for pedestrians, and will conduct, in the autumn of 2001, technical proving tests to verify its effectiveness.
In addition, to put ITS for pedestrians into practical use from FY2003, the Ministry is planning to establish technical standards based on field tests (see 3-50).
