ETC has alleviated congestion at toll gates, reduced stopping and starting at the gates and thus noise and gas emission, and thus improved the environment near the gates. At the Kawaguchi Toll Gate of the Metropolitan Expressway, ETC-equipped vehicles increased from 6% to 45%, alleviating congestion even though the total number of vehicles increased. This is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emission by 275 tons annually.
