Full-scale operation of Smart Interchanges started in October 2006, and 31 interchanges are now in full service (August 2007). Field trials are being car- ried out at two other Smart Interchanges, and field trials are being prepared at 10 others. The effects of Smart Interchanges have started to become apparent, such as improved access to tourist sites, medical facilities, and industrial parks, secured routes for emergency vehicles, reduced traffic congestion on ordi- nary highways, and revitalization of local economies.
