Highway Management Using Optical Fibers (Trial use on ordinary national highway No. 17 at Mikuni Pass) Winter management has been challenging for the zone leading to Mikuni Pass on the border between Gunma and Niigata Prefectures, since this zone is steep and mountainous and is a cold area with snow accumulation. Therefore, we installed ITV to monitor the situation of snow accumulation, freezing, etc. on the highway, and used optical fiber connections so that video images can be checked at offices and branch offices. This has made it possible to determine the situation of roadway snow accumulation in real time, allowing the establishment of an operation system with continuous management and so on, and enabling the efficient planning and direction of snow removal and salting work. |
(1) | To promote the efficient private sector optical fiber installation, in addition to a trunk network between Tokyo and Kyushu, we will connect about 50% of all sites with neighboring prefectural offices. Information box provision: About 1,600 km |
(2) | In addition to enhanced provision of the information currently available on the Internet concerning the situation of information box provision and so on, we will simplify the procedures for optical fiber installation in information boxes. URL: http://www.moc.go.jp/road |
Private Sector Usage Plans About 12,600 km of information boxes are to be provided by the end of fiscal 1999. There are private sector plans to use a total of about 30,000 km (as of June 1999). |
