Current Situation of Traffic Accidents

Traffic Accident Measures on Community Roads The number of traffic-related deaths increased with the advance of motorization and peaked in 1970 at 16,765 fatalities. Although the number of fatalities decreased by half since then and the number of fatalities in 2004 is 7,358, which is still a large number of traffic-related deaths. The number of traffic accidents (injury or death) is 952,191, the worst in history. The situation still remains severe.
Accidents on highways occur at specific locations;
53% of accidents occur at only 6% of sections on highways.
The percentage of fatalities of passengers and bicycleriders is around 40% among the total fatalities, showing high ratio compared to other countries. In addition, around 60% of fatalities involving pedestrians occur within 500m from their home. Accidents occur at their life-roads near their home.

In regions where accidents occur frequently on nearby community roads, "Safe Walking Areas" where safety of routes for passengers, etc. is secured is being developed in cooperation with Public Safety Commissions.

Development of roads for the coexistence of pedestrians and vehicles
Elimination of grades and slopes
Burying electric cables

Zone Measures

Creation of zones where pedestrians and bicycles have priority

Arterial Road Measures

Intersection Improvement
Placement of right-turn lane
Improvement of intersections
Securing parking space
Regulation of illegal parking



Improvement and modification of traffic signals
Controlling traffic signals based on information such as traffic volume
Installing LED traffic signals and barrier free-type traffic signals
