Support for safety and security

Support to reduce drug smuggling crimes

Background and Purpose

The drug problem is an extremely serious international problem. The Commission on Narcotic Drugs, held in Vienna in April 2003 requires strengthened international cooperation to expand the control of illegal drugs trafficked by sea. The reinforcement of drug smuggling control is recognized as an urgent problem. Most smuggled drugs come into Japan by sea. We support reinforcement of the ability to control the seas of Asian countries using the knowledge and experience of the Japanese Coast Guard.

To be concrete, we shall reinforce the cooperation of countries around Southeast Asia through seminars, and make proposals to other countries to strengthen international cooperation for expanding control of illegal drugs trafficked by sea.
We will detect smuggling in an effective manner from Southeast and East Asia and make a contribution for anti-drug controls.
Furthermore, we will prevent the influx of drugs into Japan.
