*1 The International Technical Conference on ESV is the only International Technical Conference on vehicle safety held on a global scale, usually every two years in the United States, Japan, Europe and other countries. The first conference was held in Paris, France in 1971. The 26th conference was held in Eindonhoven, the Netherlands, in 2019, and the 27th conference was initially planned to be held in Yokohama, Japan, in 2021. However, due to the global spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19), the 27th conference was postponed for two years. The last time Japan hosted was the 18th conference, held in 2003 in Nagoya.

MLIT, together with NHTSA of the U.S. Department of Transportation and METI, will hold the 27th International Technical Conference on ESV for Safety Technologies of Vehicles from April 3 to 6 in Yokohama, Japan (Pacifico Yokohama North).
The theme of the conference is "Enhanced and Equitable Vehicle Safety for All: Toward the next 50 years", and the conference will feature presentations and discussions on safety technologies of vehicles for protecting vulnerable road users such as children and the elderly in traffic accidents, and advanced technologies for automated driving and artificial intelligence.
During the conference, MLIT will exhibit panels on policies and measures for vehicle safety, a test vehicle used for the Japan New Car Assessment Program (JNCAP). There will also be exhibits by automobile manufacturers and others, an event of an experience of the latest safety technologies ("Ride and Learn"), technical tours, and a student safety technology design competition.
The conference is expected to attract a large number of participants from government, research institutes, and industries from various countries. For more information on the conference, please visit the official website of the 27th International Technical Conference on ESV.
