Introducing Safe, Smart, and Sustainable Infrastructure Initiatives that Support Future Regional Development at the United Nations Symposium

      On February 23 (Wed., holiday), the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) held its 50th anniversary symposium to discuss the future of regional development with the SDGs in perspective.
      Mr. Yoshioka, Vice-Minister for Engineering Affairs from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), introduced approaches to address the three key points of Safe, Smart and Sustainable under the theme of “Regional Development and Infrastructure.”
 

1. Outline symposium
      The United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) is the only United Nations headquarter organization located in the Chubu
region of Japan. Since its establishment in 1971, UNCRD has made various contributions to the internationalization of not only the Chubu region
but also to the entirety of Japan by fostering extensive human capital that specializes in regional development.
      To mark the 50th anniversary of its establishment, a symposium was held to review its past activities and discuss future regional development
to incorporate Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as part of the international agreement adopted at the UN Summit, in mind.

2. Topics from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport
      Mr. Yoshioka, Vice-Minister for Engineering Affairs, gave a lecture on the theme of "Regional Development and Infrastructure," and introduced
the three key points "Safe, Smart, and Sustainable" that are required for future infrastructure such as digitization, focusing on the case of the Chubu
Regional Development Bureau.
