The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) of Japan co-hosted the 8th Japan-Bangladesh Joint PPP Platform Meeting (the “8th Meeting”) with the Public-Private Partnership Authority (PPPA) of Bangladesh in Dhaka on July 29.
During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the progress of projects that had already been selected under the platform. Two bridge projects proposed by the Bangladeshi side were newly selected as projects for further discussion and development. In addition, one new project proposal was presented by each side, Japan and Bangladesh. |
о Since the Memorandum of Cooperation with the PPPA of Bangladesh was signed in June 2017, MLIT has been working on the development and realization of the PPP projects in Bangladesh, including urban development initiatives, with the participation of Japanese companies.
о This 8th meeting was the first meeting to be held since the establishment of Bangladesh’s new administration in February this year. Mr. Uno, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan, attended the meeting and reaffirmed the importance of strengthening cooperation with the Government of Bangladesh through this framework.
о Two bridge projects proposed by the Bangladeshi side were selected for further consideration toward PPP implementation by Japanese companies:
- Construction of Bridge over the River Meghna on Shariatpur-Chandpur Road; and
- Construction of Bhola Bridge on Barisal-Bhola Road over the river Tentulia & Kalabador.
о Japanese companies participating in the discussions for the project selection will be granted the preferential negotiating rights for those projects selected under the PPP platform without undergoing the competitive bidding process. This framework is expected to further promote the participation of Japanese companies in infrastructure PPP projects in Bangladesh.
