Subsurface congestion
under road |
The subsurface under roads in big cities is already crowded
with underground facilities such as rail lines, and tunnels for electricity,
gas, telecommunications, water and sewage, and conduits. For example, the
subsurface of a national highway in Tokyo has about 33 km of conduits per
kilometer of road.
For this reason, newly built subways, etc. must be built deeper year by
year in order to avoid those conduits.

Excavation of tunnel
by shield machine |
|
 |
 |
 |
1. |
Machines
such as that in the graphic are used when tunnels
are excavated in the Deep Underground. |
2. |
Tunnels
are finished with concrete panels while the shield
machine excavates. |
3. |
This
tunnel is used for the passage of trains and
cars, the flow of water, and electric and
telephone lines. |

 |
 |
Slurry pressure shield
At present, it is possible to excavate
tunnel with diameters of around 15 meters. |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
Three centered shield
This is a three centered shield machine
that can excavate the platform of stations. |
