Snow removal demonstration (2005 Fuyutopia Fair in Asahikawa)

Because of severe cold in winter, life and industry are greatly restricted in Hokkaido. To overcome this, we need to develop further the power sources that Hokkaido has, and plan to increase the development of industry and the economy. For one thing, people living in Hokkaido need to lead a life where they are active throughout the four seasons and become positively involved in creating an environment in which the culture can grow.
"FUYUTOPIA" is the general term for the various measures the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is promoting in Hokkaido, aimed at creating a vital life-culture for the northern areas, concentrating on making a comfortable winter living environment that is strong against snow.
These measures are being implemented over an extensive field in Hokkaido development projects, including improvement of rivers, roads, city parks, sewers, residences, harbors, farm village maintenance, and fishery infrastructure. Moreover, these measures are carried out in field activities and are contributing to improvement of the winter living environment of local resident for the realization of a Hokkaido-type life style.
"FUYUTOPIA" is representative of typical urban comprehensive snow measure models for creating a comfortable city winter environmental structure. Among measures taken are field improvement of melting snow gutters in the center of town, urban comprehensive snow measure model projects such as melted snow tanks at the north entrance to Sapporo Station, etc. Also, the nationwide event "FUYUTOPIA Fair" (known as "Yuki Mirai" in the Tohoku and Hokuriku districts) in which the cold snowy area of Hokkaido, the northeast and Hokuriku area cooperate, where there is broad exchange of information and opinions about present conditions, how to "beat the snow" and "proper use of snow" is held every year.
