    | Surrounded by the Sea of Japan,
Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk, Hokkaido is blessed by ideal conditions
for making it a leading fishery center of the world and plays an important
role as a marine products supply base for Japan. However, because of a recent trend of decreasing resources,
the Hokkaido Bureau is promoting development of fish reef resources along
a 200 nautical mile zone for Alaska Pollack and soy rockfish and the development
of reefs for laying spear squid and male octopus eggs.
Along the 3,000km Hokkaido seacoast (excluding the Northern
Territories) there are about 285 fishing ports backed by fishing villages.
These ports and fishing villages play an important role in providing processing
and physical distribution of marine products, living and work space for
people involved in the fishing industry as well as providing a recreation
      spot for the entire nation
For these reasons, in response to internal and external changes
involving the fishing industry, the Hokkaido Bureau is promoting the development
of fisheries and a stable supply of marine products by developing fishing
ports, fishing villages and the fishing industry as a whole to improve the
living and working environment of fishing villages.
 Representative projects are the following:

          | | Marine Product Supply Infrastructure Development
Project Infrastructure for producing marine products such as overall improvement
of breakwater and pier facilities basic to fishery industry output
            is being advanced.
Among these, to respond to the future trend fishery production, wide-scale
development projects for specified fishery ports and fishery grounds.
