Building Location
The present site of the Japan Patent Office is the same location as
the former building (completed in 1934). When the former building
was constructed, it was known as the Sannencho Building. Later, the
place name changed from Sannencho to Kasumigaseki, and today the building
is in the southwest part of the Kasumigaseki district of central government
buildings.
Design
This building was the first public office building to be constructed
as a large-scale "intelligent" building and it was one of
the largest intelligent buildings even compared to private office
buildings. The building's design thus incorporated features such as
a comfortable working environment befitting an "intelligent"
building, a new paperless system, and the capacity for the installation
of computerized office equipment on a large-scale. The aim was to
create an office space which would be a "place in which people
and machines can coexist."
The building's exterior design is suited to its function as an office
building employing the latest technology, with granite panels, as
little fencing as possible around the building and densely planted
greenery to take the place of fencing. The building's external space
is greenful and contributes to a comfortable urban environment.
