(International Cargo Transport)

The international cargo transport by ocean shipping of our country in fiscal 1974 noted a decrease of 1.3 percent against the previous year for import but an increase of 26.7 percent for export (Table 1-3-3).
By the commodity item, the import had a decline of crude oil at 4.8 percent and a great decrease of timber at 27.1 percent.
In the export, the iron and steel increased by 33.3 percent and exceeded 50 percent of the whole export. This is the main cause for increase of our export amidst the stagnation of the major countries in the world (Table 1-3-4).
Now looking the transport by the merchant fleet of our country (including chartered foreign vessels), an increase was noted in the import as well as export at a rate in excess of the growth of the whole transport. As the result, the loading proportion of our merchant fleet increased respectively. But, this increase of the loading proportion is accounted for the foreign vessels, and the loading proportion of the Japanese vessels is decreasing year after year.
Such increasing transport by the foreign vessels and ebbing trend of the Japanese vessels reflect the declining international competitive force of the Japanese vessels, and the decline is particularly noted in the smaller vessels.
The international air transport turned out to be a decrease in export as well as import in fiscal 1974 from the greatly increasing trend in recent years. Great is the decline by the Japan Air Lines (Co.), and the loading proportion also noted a drop (Table 1-3-3).
