Concentration of the population to large cities is still continuing, although
a trend of slowdown has been observed recently.
In the large cities, a doughnut phenomenon of the distribution of population
has been noticeable, with the midtown area having an increasing number of offices
and the suburban area having a rapidly increasing population.
As the result, the passenger transport in each of the three large urban
areas is continuing to increase as shown in Fig.
2-1-3. By the transport means, the railway transport is increasing upon
the increasing trend of the subway and commercial railway transport, while the
transport by means of bus and taxi is in a decreasing trend. Noteworthy is the
slowdown of the growth of the transport by private automobiles which showed
a rapid growth in the latter half of 1960s.
Now looking the cargo transport in the three large urban areas (Fig.
2-1-4), it had continued to increase until the latter half of 1960s at a
rate well exceeding the growth of passenger transport, but recently it has been
tending to top out. In 1974, it showed a substantial decrease, and the decline
of the private trucks was particularly noted.
