FOREWORD


@ @ The"Annual Report of Transport Economy" is an official report of the Japanese Government in which yearly transport activities in Japan are reviewed so that they can be reported to the people. The Annual Report has been published yearly since 1964.
@ @ Reconstruction of the National Railways has been one of the important problems in the transportation in Japan, and a steady step toward the reconstruction has been taken through revision of the Fare Law, etc. Next, for the ports and harbors, airports, etc., New Five Year Plans have been formulated, but under the intensifying restrictions including aggravating financial situation, it is required to meet the demands for, for example, qualitative improvement of the transportation. Thirdly, there has evolved recently a great movement in the international environment surrounding the transportation, while the recession has inflicted a great influence upon the shipping and shipbuilding. This summary in English of the White Paper on Transportation describes the foregoing problems and also the progress of motorization, management of the transport enterprises, traffic safety and environmental preservation in Japan, and is presented in a hope that it will serve for the people in the foreign countries to understand the situation of transportation in Japan.
