This booklet is a summary of the Annual Report of Transport Economy for
fiscal 1985 (the 1984 Transport White Paper), which has been published annually
since 1964 by the Ministry of Transport to provide the nation with basic information
about Japan's transport activities.
Chapter 1 of this report, entitled "Aiming at Activation of Transport", deals
with the Ministry's efforts to reexamine transport-related laws and regulations,
so that the transport industry will be able to provide efficient, stable and
positive services now and in the future. It also deals with the Ministry's efforts
to introduce the private sector's vitality into the field of transport.
Chapter 2 deals with the reform of the Japanese National Railways (JNR) which
is an urgent national task and states that the Ministry has determined to tackle
this with all its might.
Chapter 3 and the following chapters deal with the present situation and
future tasks concerning such problems as "Responses to Changing International
Transport Situation", "Efforts to the Development of Public Transportation Systems.
Responses to Changes in,' '' the Freight Distribution System", and "Ways of
Investments for Transport-Related Infrastructures".
We hope this booklet will be of use for those interested in Japan's transport
activities.
