On 6 December 1993, new passenger terminal #2 was inaugurated at New Tokyo
International Airport (Narita) where, year by year, passenger congestion has
been getting worse.
The new terminal building has a total floor space of 280 thousand square
meters, which is 1.6 times larger than terminal #1. It is hoped that this will
contribute greatly to relieve the congestion and provide a comfortable, spacious
area. It was organized to provide the highest quality of service by the various
facilities with the introduction of the latest technology such as a monorail
shuttle service using an air levitation system.
Construction of the west wing terminal facilities at Tokyo International
Airport (Haneda) carried out as the 2nd phase of the offshore expansion of the
airport was completed and opened for business on 27 September 1993. Key airport
functions, such as the passenger terminal building (except the International
Flight Portion) and the Air Traffic Control Tower, have moved to the new building.
The access road was connected with the Tokyo Bay route and circling route N0.8.
Regarding railway access, both Tokyo monorail and Keihin Express have extended
their lines to the new terminal. The Airport has changed completely and can
now satisfy the requirements of a gateway airport of the greater Tokyo area.
