About the response to passengers stranded at Narita and other airports due to Iceland’s volcanic eruption

The volcanic eruption that occurred in Iceland on March 20, 2010 developed into a major eruption on April 14, with volcanic ash clouds reaching the skies above Europe and causing the widespread closure of airspace and airports in many European countries on April 15. For passengers stranded at the Narita and Kansai Airports due to cancelled homebound flights, the Japan Tourism Agency decided to provide assistance jointly and in cooperation with the airport companies in setting up consultation windows, allowing the passengers to use airport facilities, arranging excursions around the airports, and providing other forms of assistance.

Specifically, we are coordinating with the parties concerned regarding the following response, and will implement these efforts as soon as preparations are completed:

[1] Setting up consultation windows by the Japan National Tourism Organization
[2] Implementing an excursion (a day-tour with lunch served) around each airport (scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM today for Narita Airport)
[3] Providing assistance to make reservations at inexpensive lodging facilities by the Tourist Information Centers (International Tourism Center of Japan) at the airports

We also plan to take such measures as providing free shuttle bus service between Narita Airport and downtown Narita.

Today, Narita International Airport Corporation and Kansai International Airport Co., Ltd. launched a “Support Counter for Passengers Stranded by Iceland’s Volcanic Eruption” to provide bed rolls and snacks, free shower coupons, free admission to the waiting rooms (usually charged), furnishing PCs with Internet access, distributing free English journals, and other amenities.
