The 23rd International Congress on Thrombosis and Hemostasis was awarded the 2011 IAPCO Award!

The 23rd International Congress on Thrombosis and Hemostasis, (ISTH2011) held in Kyoto in July last year (ISTH2011), received the 2011 IAPCO Award. On Friday March 9,2012 a trophy and a certificate of merit were given to the chairperson of the Japanese Organization Committee. It is the first-ever award for Japan.
This award is given for contributions in holding the Congress as scheduled irrespective of the environment of adversity under which a number of international Congresses were forced to be canceled or put off.

 4. What is the International Congress on Thrombosis and Hemostasis?
  It is an academic society making presentations and discussions in regard to thrombotic diseases such as thrombosis, myocardial infarction, as well as clinical conditions, diagnoses, prophylaxis, medical treatments and so forth for hemorrhagic diseases.
 (1) Holding period: July 23 – 28, 2011
 (2) Holding venue: The Kyoto International Conference Center
 (3) Number of participants: 6,000 (4,000 from abroad, 2,000 from Japan) from about 80 countries. *The largest international congress held after the earthquake.
 5. Background of the award:
Due to the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, and the nuclear power plant accident, a large number of international congresses were forced to be canceled or postponed. Under such circumstances, the committee of the 23rd International Congress on Thrombosis and Hemostasis mobilized a neutral risk survey company to collect necessary information to decide whether or not the congress should still be held. The organizers’ enthusiastic actions enabled the congress to go on as scheduled.

*IAPCO (International Association of Professional Convention Organizer): An international organization established in 1968 aiming to improve the quality of the PCO (Professional Congress Organization). More than 100 PCOs from 35 countries are members. Its headquarters is in Zurich.

*IAPCO Award: An award to be presented to congress organizers and the like who have carried out excellent measures for the congresses held in the year, based on recommendations from member companies of IAPCO. It was presented to 56 bodies since 1992.
