In order to facilitate ITS deployment in regional communities and thereby revitalize economy and improve quality of life, "Project for developing ITS-related facilities" was launched in April 2000. This project aims to ensure safe and smooth traffic on roads managed by regional public entities and improve convenience for road users, and provides support for various activity which cover the improvement of national highways and municipal roads, through the installation of ITS-related devices such as optical fibers, information terminals for "Michi-no-Eki (roadside rest area)," and sensors.
It also helps regional communities finance the improvement of infrastructures and promotes the introduction of ITS systems tailored to meet regional characteristics and problems, thus accelerating nationwide ITS deployment.
