In Miyagi Prefecture, the National Athletic Meet and the First National Abilympics were held in 2001 and the World Cup soccer games in 2002. Since large numbers of visitors were anticipated from all over the word, smooth road traffic had to be ensured. ITS related organizations jointly conducted the first ITS Showcase project in the Tohoku region to enable road users to experience ITS and to trigger the introduction of ITS in the region.
