ETC:Electronic Toll Collection System

In order to relieve congestion at tollgates on toll roads, improve user service and cut down administration costs, the Ministry of Construction and the four Highway Public Corporations are promoting development of the electronic toll collection system (ETC) whereby vehicles pass through the tollgate without stopping and the toll is paid automatically using radio communication between the antenna installed at the tollgate and the equipment mounted on the vehicle. As part of ETC development, the system was introduced at the Odawara tollbooth on the Odawara-Atsugi road on a trial basis on March 31.
